This spring, the EMA Fund began a small pilot program to aid callers living in and traveling to NewHampshire. Under the Hyde Amendment, New Hampshire’s Medicaid program does not cover abortion care, and there is currently no statewide abortion fund serving New Hampshire. With these two factors in mind, EMA volunteers were driven to provide services to people living in New Hampshire, and began a pilot program to assess the need and our capacity to address it.
Since March, EMA’s pilot program has received more than 50 calls from the few New Hampshire residents clinics have referred to us, and we know we’re just scratching the surface. The program funded more than $7,000 in grants through this fall.
Each week we have seen a growing number of funding requests from New Hampshire. Funding for New Hampshire cases has become a lifeline for many, and demand has quickly outpaced available funding.
Residents in New Hampshire are the most supportive of abortion rights out of any state in the country, according to a 2015 report from The Public Religion Research Institute, with 75 percent of those polled in favor of abortion rights. Yet that support is not met with more access to abortion care. With a lack of state funding and no general abortion fund in the entire state, the EMA Fund is working to understand the need and help fund individuals.
We are so thankful to the donors who helped us raise an additional $7,000 to meet the need in New Hampshire through the end of 2016.
