Eastern Massachusetts Abortion Fund, inc. (EMA Fund)

Get Help

We’re here to help.

The Eastern Massachusetts Abortion Fund is a volunteer organization with a modest budget. We won’t be able to pay for your entire abortion, but we’ll do whatever we can to help. At this time, we can provide assistance only if you live in eastern Massachusetts or if you will be traveling here for your appointment. If you live elsewhere, please visit the National Network of Abortion Funds to find the abortion fund in your community.

1. Pull together all the information you’ll need
    • The EMA Fund works directly with your clinic or doctor. Please make an appointment before you call us.  If you need to find a provider, visit the National Abortion Federation, Planned Parenthood, or GynPages for a list of abortion providers. It’s okay if you end up postponing your appointment later; this happens all the time, and your doctor or clinic won’t charge you for it.
    • Do you have MassHealth? Almost all MassHealth plans cover abortion. If you are having trouble finding a clinic or doctor who will take your MassHealth, give us a call and we’ll help you find one that does.
    • Can you enroll in MassHealth? If you don’t have insurance and if you’re early in your pregnancy, visit the MassHealth website to get information about enrolling, or contact Health Care for All and let them know we referred you. If you can get onto MassHealth, your abortion will be free.
    • Do you have other health insurance? Many insurance plans cover abortion. Call the telephone number on the back of your insurance card to find out if yours does.
    • When scheduling your appointment, ask how much the abortion will cost. We’ll need to know how much money you need so that together we can come up with a plan.
    • Are you going to have to pay for other things in order to get to your appointment? Childcare, train/bus tickets, translation or interpretation services? Figure out how much you’ll need for these things – we can help you find money to cover these costs, as well.
    • Not sure what your insurance covers or if you qualify for MassHealth? Contact Health Care for All.
2. Call the EMA Fund and leave a voice mail
    • Before calling the EMA Fund, make sure your phone can accept blocked calls (that is, calls from a restricted number). If you are unable to turn off this feature on your phone, you will need to give us another number that does accept blocked calls, like an office or friend’s phone.
    • Call us at 617-354-3839 or 1-866-354-3839.
    • When you call, you will need to leave a message. In your message, give us the following information:
    - Your first name and your telephone number
    - When your appointment is
    - How many weeks you are into your pregnancy (or how many weeks since your last menstrual period)
    - How much your appointment will cost
    - When is a good time to reach you
    - If it’s okay for us to leave you a message if you don’t answer your phone
    - Whether it’s safe for a man to call you back, or if it must be a woman
    • We will call you back within 48 hours of receiving your message. If you do not hear from us within 48 hours, please call back. When we call back, your caller ID will show the number as *Blocked* or *Restricted*.
3. Work together with the EMA Fund to find the money you need
    • When you talk to the EMA Fund, we’ll ask you a little bit about what’s going on right now. The more information you can provide us – about your finances, your living situation, your pregnancy – the easier it will be for us to work together on a plan for you to get all the money you need.
    • Remember, while we usually can give you some money to help pay for your abortion, we won’t be able to cover the entire cost. That’s why we will work together with you to find a solution.
    • We don’t store any of your personal information. Unless you give us permission to contact you again, you’ll never hear from us after you get your abortion. We shred all of your personal information, and we never give your name to anyone other than your clinic or doctor.
    • The EMA Fund works with all immigrants and non-citizens, regardless of language proficiency, documentation, or residency status. The EMA Fund does not record or report information about your immigration status.
    • The EMA Fund works with minors. We respect your privacy. We will work with you, and we will not contact your parents.
    • If the EMA Fund gives you money to help pay for your abortion, we will pay your doctor directly. You don’t need to worry about picking up a check or getting a voucher from us. However, this also means that we can’t reimburse you for any money you have already spent.
