The Eastern Massachusetts Abortion (EMA) Fund is a 501(c)(3) organization that helps people living in and traveling to Massachusetts access abortion care.
EMA helps people pay for their abortions and access logistical support they need to get care. We provide funding for abortion care, coordinate travel and lodging, offer direct cash assistance, and connect abortion seekers with trained abortion doulas for logistical and emotional support.
The EMA Fund is a 501(c)3 organization, and all donations are fully tax-deductible. Our EIN is 04-3502604.

Since 2022, the need for funding has increased significantly, and your support helps us better meet this moment by funding more callers than ever. We’ve more than quadrupled our reach in the past 2-3 years, going from funding 217 callers and $161,000 granted in 2022, to 1,137 callers supported and $783,000 granted in 2024.

Abortion care costs vary widely depending on the type of abortion sought and how far along a pregnancy has advanced. For clients seeking medication abortion (available under 12 weeks), the cost varies between $150-700 for the abortion pills. In-clinic procedural abortions under 12 weeks cost between $450-800. From 12-20 weeks, abortions typically cost upwards of $1000, with the cost rising to tens of thousands of dollars for care after 20 weeks, which is often sought due to serious medical risk. Costs can also depend on insurance coverage and many insurers don’t cover care past 20 weeks at all.

Yes, every week. More and more, the EMA Fund is recognized as a fund in a “receiving state” - a state with relative legal protections for abortion care (not as much as some states, but more than other states) that has seen a huge influx of abortion seekers traveling over the past couple of years from other states, often from Georgia and Florida.

Since the closure of the Jane Fund in Central Mass, we fund abortion seekers state-wide to ensure there aren’t coverage gaps. We still primarily collaborate with clinics and hospitals that provide abortion services in the Greater Boston Area and beyond, and most of our funding happens east of Worcester County. We also collaborate with the Abortion Rights Fund of Western Mass and Tides for Reproductive Freedom to make sure clients can access funding regardless of where in Massachusetts they seek care.
